Our work focuses on the development of at-risk kids into responsible citizens, although some of our students come to us from a cross-section of our nation's youth and are therefore not considered "at-risk." We see tangible changes in the lives of these young people, at-risk or not. To know what kind of problems we're up against when students first enter Teach One to Lead One®, take a look at this document from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention: "At-Risk Conditions of U.S. School-Age Children." Now look at the difference we're making... When our Teach One to Lead One® (T1L1) facilitators go into public school classrooms, alternative schools, or juvenile court, they share Universal Principles with the kids--principles that are true at all times, for all people, everywhere. Principles such as Integrity, Honor, Self-Control. Without any prior warning, the first thing on the agenda when a new T1L1 season begins, is to give a confidential, no-wrong-answers Assessment for them to fill out. We tell the kids simply to be honest with their answers. We ask in the survey about their attitude about drug use, alcohol, and whether they engage in sexual activity. We ask them if it's right or wrong to cheat, lie, or mistreat someone you don't like. And we ask questions to help us know the leadership potential in kids. We can't wait until the end of the semester (about 16 weeks later, depending on the T1L1 setting)! We give the same Assessment to the kids and then send the bubbled-in answer sheets to our analyst. He digests the data and reports back to us the amazing results. There has been an attitude adjustment in these kids. There is a difference in their behavior. And they show signs of having a hope and a future. In short, kids' lives are changed. Ready to see the results? Follow on to the updated 2006 Teach One to Lead One® Character Assessment Report! This is the empirical evidence (evaluated, measurable statistics) that T1L1 makes a difference. But you'll also find inspiring anecdotal evidence (testimonials from kids, parents, and educators) that reinforces the findings of the empirical data.
